Unfortunately, when I received this machine I observed the following:

  • The crank handle was completely jammed
  • The reset mechanism did not work on the display register
  • The sliders in positions 9 to 2 all moved freely, but the slider in the first position did not move at all.
  • The gear in the first position did not disengage as it should have when the crank handle was turned. It seemed that the drum was not aligned correctly. In fact, the drum seemed to be bent on its axis, which prevented the gears from disengaging and prevented it from turning freely on the shaft.

Upon closer inspection it became apparent that the drum was bent, possibly a a result of the machine being dropped, and that it was too close to the drum in the second position.

After some time I decided that if the drum could be bent out of shape, then I should be able to bend it back into shape. I decided to give it a try and used two different methods to gently bend the drum.

After several tries, the drum started to take on its proper position and shape. I was eventually able to rotate the crank, but the drum still wasn't aligned correctly and the machine jammed after I turned the crank 180 degrees.

Everything was jammed up, so I had to remove the machine from its base and loosen all the major points of structural support, after which I was able to reset all registers and drums to their original positions.

I used a clamp to bend the drum a bit more, and after a few more failed attempts and a few more tries, it is back in shape and it now seems to be working quite well!
